we spent the early part of the day quite normally. i did a round of laundry, the boys took a dip in the jacuzzi, we had a quiet breakfast, i packed what was left to be packed. we checked out at 10.30am, our flight to san diego was at 2pm.
but…we can always plan but He is the master planner. as we were putting our luggage in the hotel's airport shuttle, hubby had a seizure. shocked everyone who was there, the driver, the bellman, security, walking guests. not to mention the boys who just couldn't stop screaming and crying.
long story short as i don't want to dwell on this, security called for emt, there were complications as hubby was coming out of his delusions and he became slightly violent and had to be strapped on the stretcher, was taken by ambulance to the nearest hospital, spring valley, with me and the boys, dragging our luggage and many, many carry ons, following behind in a taxi. we missed our flight to san diego. i had a new flight booked for very late in the evening as i didn't know how long the doctor was going to hold hubby but he was only under observation in the emergency for about 3 hours and was allowed to leave for us to continue our journey. very short version of what had happened but it was extremely scary, being in a foreign country, with the boys and luggage and all documentation to look after, trying to explain what hubby is suffering from, trying to manage our flight and time and hoping hubby wouldn't be held overnight or longer. i am forever traumatized by what happened.
anyway, we left for the airport from the hospital. when we got there we had a lot of hours to spare before our flight so we tried to change to an earlier flight. alhamdulillah we were put in the next one and had only 2 hours to wait. we had time to check-in, go through security and have lunch before we had to queue to board. this time we took southwest airlines, which was ok except for the 'first check-in first sit' policy. not advisable with many kids in a party.
the flight felt short, maybe because we all slept through it. we arrived in san diego and got the hotel shuttle to our hotel just outside little italy. by this time hubby was much better, having slept undisturbed on the plane. we checked-in and went for dinner around the area.
our first full day in san diego was low key. we just took a stroll, yeah a stroll, around town. we wanted to relax after the previous day's drama. we bought a compass card and 2 days pass to get on the trolley and busses. we first took the green line as it was the longest. it took us around san diego for about an hour and we changed to the orange line to get us back to town.
having changed our plan, we were a bit unsure of what to do. around lunchtime hubby finally decided to go back to our initial plan of going to the carlsbad outlet. we bought the tickets on coaster line and waited for the next train which was departing in 2 hour's time. sometime during our wait we decide to scrap that idea totally and walk in the town centre. so there goes the ticket. oh well…that's what unplanning would do to you.
we took the trolley to gaslamp quarters. i kept praying that we made the right decision because i would hate for us to burn the train tickets for nothing. but it was a lovely place, gaslamp quarters. even nicer with the shops slowly turning on their lights. we walked all the way from the trolley stop at one end, to another at the other end, stopping at various shops to substitute the cancelled carlsbad outing.
we took the trolley back to little italy to have dinner at the kebab shop, again, before going back to the hotel to rest. after almost 3 weeks, my feet, calves, thighs, well, everything really, were aching badly.
